What is a straight bath?

Straight baths feature parallel sides and squared-off ends, creating a classic rectangular footprint that maximises bathing space within a defined area. Unlike shaped baths such as L-shaped or P-shaped designs, straight baths maintain a consistent width along their entire length.

This geometry makes them incredibly versatile for bathroom planning as they fit neatly between three walls in alcoves, work beautifully along single walls, or can be positioned as freestanding centrepieces. The straight configuration uses bathroom floor space efficiently, making it suitable for both compact cloakrooms and spacious family bathrooms. Which straight bath style should I choose?

Your choice depends on bathing preferences and bathroom layout:

  • Single-ended square straight baths: These position the waste at one end with a gently sloped backrest at the opposite end, distinct head and foot areas. This design offers the deepest bathing depth and works well when the waste end fits against a wall.

  • Single-ended curved straight baths: Offers the same functionality with softer, rounded edges that create a more organic appearance and are gentler if you accidentally contact the rim.

  • Double-ended square straight baths: These place the waste centrally, allowing bathing from either end with matching slopes on both sides. Ideal for shared bathrooms or when you want installation flexibility.

What sizes are available in straight baths?

Straight baths span five lengths to suit different spaces. The 1400mm size works perfectly in smaller bathrooms and en-suites without compromising bathing comfort. Mid-range 1500mm and 1600mm options balance space efficiency with bathing room, fitting most standard UK bathroom dimensions. The 1700mm length is our most popular, offering a generous bathing space while fitting comfortably in typical bathroom layouts. For those wanting maximum luxury, 1800mm straight baths provide spa-like proportions.

Width choices typically include 700mm, 750mm for slightly wider comfort, or 800mm for truly spacious bathing. All straight baths are reversible, so you can orient them according to your plumbing layout without ordering specific handed versions.

What panel materials work with straight baths?

Straight baths can be made from both acrylic and MDF panels, each offering distinct benefits:

  • Straight baths with acrylic panels: These provide perfect colour matching with the bath surface, creating seamless integration with the same high-gloss white finish and complete waterproofing.

  • Straight baths with MDF panels: Delivers superior rigidity with a more substantial, furniture-quality feel. Available in high-gloss white and indigo grey finishes, MDF options expand your design palette beyond standard white.

Both materials are scratch-resistant, water-resistant, and designed specifically for straight bath installations. For detailed fitting guidance, see our professional bath panel installation guide.

How do I maintain straight bath panels?

For acrylic panels, wipe down after each use with a soft cloth to prevent water spots and soap buildup. Clean weekly with warm water and mild detergent, avoiding abrasive cleaners that could scratch the high gloss finish.

MDF panels require slightly different care. Ensure the edges and joints remain properly sealed to prevent moisture ingress. While MDF is water-resistant, its edges are vulnerable. Wipe spills promptly and avoid prolonged exposure to standing water.

Both panel types benefit from bathroom ventilation to reduce humidity exposure. Never use harsh chemicals, scouring pads, or abrasive cleaners on either material. The scratch-resistant finishes mean gentle cleaning maintains appearance for years. Check panel fixings annually to ensure clips remain secure. Properly maintained panels should last as long as the bath itself.

Can I get a straight shower bath?

Yes! While our straight baths don't include shower screens, their rectangular design makes them compatible with separately purchased bath screens. The straight edges provide flush mounting surfaces for screen frames, simplifying installation compared to shaped baths. For guidance on selecting the right screen for your bath, read about the best shower screens for baths.

If you're specifically looking for straight baths pre-configured with shower screens, explore our straight shower baths, which offer complete straight bath-shower combinations. Alternatively, our wider shower baths collection includes L-shaped and P-shaped options designed specifically for dual bathing and showering functionality.

What accessories complete a straight bath installation?

Several accessories ensure your straight bath functions perfectly. Bath waste kits (sold separately) are essential and include the waste outlet, overflow assembly, and associated plumbing connections. Bath taps also complete the installation. Options include deck-mounted bath fillers, wall-mounted bath taps, or bath shower mixers if you're adding shower functionality. Shower screens (when required) mount directly to bath rims and adjacent walls.
