Rectangular Shower Enclosure Buying Guide

If you’re not too sure what you need to look for when buying a rectangular shower enclosure, then read our buying guide below. You’ll find all of the information you need to buy the perfect rectangular shower enclosure for your home!

What is a rectangular shower enclosure?

As the name suggests, a rectangular shower enclosure is a shower enclosure which is rectangular in shape. It sits in the corner of your bathroom and uses two walls, a shower panel and a shower door.

Left and right handed rectangular shower enclosures

Being rectangular in shape, the shower enclosure will be longer on one wall than the other.
Because of this, rectangular shower cubicles are available in left and right handed versions - so you can choose which one of the two walls in the corner of your bathroom will be used for the ‘longer’ part of the rectangle shower enclosure.

What size rectangular shower enclosures are there?

Rectangular shower enclosures are available in a wide variety of sizes, making them perfect for almost any size bathroom.

At Royal Bathrooms we stock rectangular shower enclosures in a range of sizes, including the following widths:

  • 700mm
  • 760mm
  • 800mm
  • 900mm
  • 1000mm
  • 1100mm
  • 1200mm
  • 1400mm

  • 1700mm

And, the following depths:

  • 700mm
  • 760mm

Simply use the menu on the left hand side of this page to select the width and/or depth of the rectangular shower enclosure that you desire, and you’ll be presented with the appropriate models.

What type of doors do rectangular shower enclosures have?

One of the most appealing things about rectangular shower enclosures is their versatility.
They are available with a number of different door types, so it’s easy for you to select the perfect shower enclosure for your home.

Whether you want a traditional pivot door that opens outwards (like a normal door), or you want sliding or bi-fold doors, there will be a rectangular shower enclosure here at Royal Bathrooms for you.
Below we’ve set out the different doors that you’ll typically find on rectangular shower cubicles.

Sliding shower doors

Consisting of either one or two panels (sliding doors with two panels are usually called ‘double sliding doors’), sliding shower doors are perfect if you want to save space in your bathroom.
Because they don’t need to open outwards like other types of door, you can fit your rectangle shower enclosure in a more compact space. Sliding doors also make it very easy to get in or out of the shower, so they are a good option if you are of slightly larger build, or simply don’t want the hassle of opening and closing a traditional door.

Sliding doors will normally run on rails which makes them easy to open and close. Our sliding doors feature removable rollers which make them easy to clean too.

Pivot/hinged shower doors

Pivot (or, as they are also known, hinged) shower doors operate in the same way as a traditional household door. For example, they swing open or closed from a fixed point.
Many people like pivot shower doors as they are very easy to clean and maintain. Simply open the door and you can easily clean it from top to bottom.

Pivot shower doors however, do place some limitations on where you can situate your shower enclosure. This is because, like any other door of this type, they require sufficient room to properly open and close.

Bi-fold shower doors

An increasingly popular option on rectangle shower enclosures, bi-fold doors use a concertina-mechanism to open and close. The panels are joined together and fold in on themselves as you close them. They use a runner to open and close.
Because of their design, bi-fold doors are ideal for use on particularly narrow shower enclosures.

What parts do rectangular shower enclosures come with?

Rectangular shower cubicles come with a glass shower panel, shower door, door fittings (which will be rollers or hinges depending on your choice of door) and general fixings.
It is possible to buy a rectangular shower enclosure with a tray, but this isn’t always the case. Please check the product description carefully before making your purchase.

Protecting the shower walls

Because rectangular shower enclosures make use of two walls in your bathroom, it’s important that you give some consideration as to how you will protect the walls from water damage.
If you are replacing an existing shower, then it’s highly likely that there will already be tiles or wall panels in place. If that’s the case, then great! But be careful not to damage the tiles or panels when installing your new rectangular shower enclosure.

Should you be installing a rectangular shower enclosure for the first time, then you’ll need to choose between using tiles or wall panels to protect the two bathroom walls of your enclosure.
Tiles look beautiful, and are a much-sought after home addition, but can be tricky to properly install if you do not have prior experience. Wall panels on the other hand are easy to install, but lack the aesthetic appeal of bathroom tiles.

Glass thickness

Finally, you should consider what thickness of glass your chosen rectangular shower enclosure uses.
Thicker glass adds additional safety and durability to your shower, but can be particularly heavy. This can not only make the shower harder to install, but it can have structural implications (depending on where you are installing the shower).

In recognition of this, Royal Bathrooms offers rectangular shower enclosures with different thicknesses of glass (4mm, 5mm and 6mm), so that you pick the perfect glass thickness for your particular situation.
