What is a shower bath?

A shower bath combines a bathtub with a dedicated showering area in one unit. The design typically features a wider section at one end, providing extra space for standing whilst showering. This bath and shower combo eliminates the need for separate fixtures, making it an ideal choice for bathrooms with limited space. The dual functionality means every family member's preferences are accommodated within a single installation.

Benefits of bath and shower combinations

Combined bath and shower units save significant space compared to installing separate fixtures. You avoid the cost of purchasing two products and paying for dual installations. Water and heating efficiency improve since you're using one fixture. Cleaning becomes simpler with fewer surfaces to maintain. Families benefit from flexibility, letting different members choose their preferred bathing method. The practical design suits properties with limited bathroom space without compromising functionality.

Types of shower bath designs

Our bath and shower combos offer a range of designs to suit your space and needs:

  • L-shaped shower baths: These feature a squared-off, wider end, creating a practical showering zone whilst maintaining a comfortable bathing area. The angular design suits modern aesthetics and fits neatly into corners.

  • P-shaped shower baths: These offer a curved showering end that provides more shoulder room and a softer appearance.

  • Straight shower baths: Have a consistent width throughout, making them suitable for alcove installations where extra showering width isn't possible.

Shower bath sizes and configurations

Shower bathtub dimensions vary to suit different bathrooms:

  • 1500mm shower baths: These are great for smaller bathrooms.

  • 1600mm shower baths: This size adds more leg room.

  • 1700mm shower baths: The standard size that will fit most UK bathrooms comfortably.

  • 1800mm shower baths: These provide maximum space for both bathing and showering.

Each size is available in both left-handed and right-handed configurations, ensuring the wider shower end positions correctly for your bathroom layout. For more sizes or information, take a look at our full collection of bath sizes.

Are shower bath combos suitable for small bathrooms?

Yes, shower bath combos are ideal for small bathrooms. By combining two fixtures into one footprint, you free up space that would otherwise be occupied by separate installations. The compact design allows you to incorporate both bathing and showering capabilities without occupying valuable floor space.

Even our smallest 1500mm shower baths provide full functionality whilst fitting tight spaces. For more space-saving ideas, read our expert advice on small bath sizes.

Choosing panels for your shower bath

Bath panels complete your shower bath installation by covering exposed sides. Acrylic panels in gloss white perfectly match the bath material, providing seamless coordination. Furthermore, it retains heat longer than alternatives, keeping bathwater warm throughout your soak. Baths with MDF panels offer alternative colour options, including grey gloss, or wood-effect finishes. Both options are durable and are naturally resistant to bacterial growth and staining.

L-shaped and P-shaped baths require specially shaped panels that follow the contours of the tub. Most shower baths need a front panel, with some configurations also requiring an end panel. Our guide on how to fit a bath panel provides installation instructions.

Bath with shower screen options

Shower screens prevent water from escaping when the shower function is used. Within our collection, you can choose various options which all offer their own benefits. Fixed screens attach permanently to the wall, providing reliable and straightforward water containment. Hinged screens swing open for easy access to the bath when bathing. And screens with rails include a towel bar for added functionality.

Frame finishes include chrome for contemporary spaces, brushed brass for warmth, or matte black for statement style. Some designs feature abstract grid patterns or fluted glass for visual interest. For selection advice, read our article on the best shower screen for bath.

Enclosed tub and shower combo installation

Installing a shower bath follows similar steps to standard bath installation, but requires careful positioning of the shower screen. First, position the tub and level using adjustable legs, then connect the waste and overflow pipework. Seal edges where the bath meets walls and fit panels to conceal the bath framework. Install the shower screen and finally, connect the shower fixtures to your water supply. For P-shaped installations specifically, see our guide on how to install a P-shaped bath.

Can I retrofit a shower bath into my existing bathroom?

Retrofitting a shower bath into an existing bathroom is possible with proper planning. Measure your current bath space carefully, noting the positions of pipes and wall clearances. Select a shower bath with a suitable left- or right-hand configuration and ensure that your wall structure can support the fixing of the shower screen.
