What is a heated towel rail?
A heated towel rail is a wall-mounted bathroom fitting that warms your towels and helps maintain the room's overall temperature. It consists of a series of horizontal bars connected by two vertical uprights, which are heated from within by hot water or an electric element. The warm bars transfer heat to any towels draped over them, keeping them dry, warm and ready to use.
How do heated towel rails work?
Heated towel rails connect to your central heating system via two valve connections at the base, one on the flow and one on the return. Hot water from the boiler circulates through the rail, heating the bars and warming any towels draped over them. Electric models work independently from the central heating, using a heating element inside the rail that connects to a fused spur. Dual-fuel models can operate on either central heating or electricity, providing year-round flexibility.
What styles of heated towel rail are available?
Our heated towel rail range covers three main styles, all available in multiple finishes and sizes:
-
Ladder towel rails: The most popular style, featuring horizontal rungs between two vertical bars. Ample hanging space for multiple towels. Available in straight and curved versions.
-
Straight towel rails: Clean, vertical lines that suit modern, minimalist bathrooms. Flat bars run parallel throughout.
-
Curved towel rails: The horizontal bars bow forward gently, creating more hanging depth for thicker towels. A softer look that suits both contemporary and traditional bathrooms.

What size heated towel rail do I need?
Heated towel rail sizes are defined by height x width in millimetres. Height determines how many rungs the rail has and how much heat it outputs. Width determines how much of a towel the rail covers and how many can hang at once.
Find the right size for your space and needs:
-
700mm to 800mm towel rails: compact options suited to cloakrooms, small en-suites or any wall with limited height. Enough space for one to two towels.
-
1000mm to 1200mm towel rails: a practical mid-range size for a standard family bathroom. Good hanging capacity without dominating the wall.
-
1600mm to 1800mm towel rails: the tallest options, providing the most rungs, the highest heat output and the strongest visual presence. Well-suited to larger bathrooms or those without a separate radiator.
If your bathroom relies on the towel rail as its only heat source, a taller and wider model will deliver more BTUs. If you have a separate bathroom radiator already doing the heating work, a smaller rail sized to your wall space is perfectly adequate.
Which heated towel rail warms towels the fastest?
Electric and dual-fuel towel rails heat up faster than central heating models because they work on demand rather than waiting for the boiler to fire. Among central heating models, a rail with fewer, wider bars will warm towels more quickly than a tall, narrow rail with many rungs, as there is more direct contact between the hot bar and the towel. Width matters as much as height here. A 500mm to 600mm-wide rail will warm a standard bath towel more evenly than a 300mm-wide one.
Should heated towel rails be left on all the time?
Central heating towel rails run when your heating system is on and switch off with it, so continuous use is not a concern. Electric towel rails should not be left on continuously unless they have a built-in timer or thermostat. Running an electric rail for 24 hours will unnecessarily increase energy costs. A programmable timer set to come on in the morning and evening is the most efficient approach. Most of our electric-compatible models support standard timer accessories.
For more advice, see our guide on how to increase radiator efficiency.
How much does a heated towel rail cost to run?
Central heating towel rails add no additional running cost beyond your existing boiler usage, as they form part of the circuit. Electric towel rails cost more to run as they draw power directly. A typical 60W electric towel rail running for two hours per day costs approximately 1.5p to 3p per hour, depending on your energy tariff, working out to roughly £5 to £10 per year at typical usage. A larger 300W model will cost proportionally more.
How do I fit a heated towel rail?
Mark and drill wall fixing points at the correct bracket centres to match your towel rail width. Check for pipes and cables before drilling. Fix the brackets using appropriate wall fixings for your wall type. Hang the towel rail on the brackets, then connect the flow and return valves to your pipework. Bleed the rail after filling to remove any trapped air before switching on the heating.

How do I clean a heated towel rail?
Wipe down the bars with a damp microfibre cloth and a mild detergent. Avoid abrasive pads or harsh chemical sprays, which can damage the finish over time. For chrome finishes, dry thoroughly after cleaning to prevent water spots. A small amount of chrome polish can restore shine if the surface has dulled. For limescale around valve connections, apply diluted white vinegar, leave for a brief time, then rinse and dry.
