Basins

The basin is one of the hardest-working fixtures in any bathroom, so it needs to look the part and perform day in, day out. Our range includes pedestal, wall-mounted, countertop, cloakroom, semi-pedestal and contemporary designs, covering every layout from compact en-suites to spacious family bathrooms.

What type of bathroom sink suits my space?

Start with the room itself. In a compact cloakroom or en-suite, a wall-mounted basin or cloakroom sink keeps floor space clear and the room feeling open. For a traditional or family setting, a pedestal basin conceals plumbing neatly while offering familiar, reliable function.

Modern bathrooms often call for a countertop basin set on a worktop vanity unit, which adds storage underneath and a statement look above. If your scheme leans more contemporary, our contemporary basins range covers geometric shapes and clean-line designs. For a full style breakdown, see our bathroom basin buying guide.

What size basin do I need?

Most UK basins sit between 350mm and 570mm wide, with 550mm the most common size for a main bathroom. Cloakroom basins dip to around 400mm to 450mm when space is tight. Countertop basins tend to run larger for visual impact.

Check the depth of the bowl and the projection from the wall, too. Leaving roughly 600mm of clear space in front keeps the basin comfortable to use.

How do I pick the right tap for my sink?

Count the tap holes first. A single hole suits a basin mixer tap. Two holes need separate pillar basin taps. No holes means you'll want a wall-mounted or tall basin tap that reaches the rim.

Our full basin taps range covers every style, and the buyer's guide for bathroom taps explains water pressure requirements in detail.

Which basin materials are the hardest-wearing?

Vitreous china is the most popular choice for UK bathrooms and makes up the bulk of our range. It's a refined ceramic fired at high temperatures, giving a dense, non-porous surface that resists staining, scratches and chips. The glossy glaze wipes clean in seconds and holds its finish for years of daily use.

Polymarble is the other main option in our collection. Made from a blend of resin and marble dust, it has a warmer, more sculptural feel than ceramic and handles knocks well without chipping. Both materials are low-maintenance and built for the humidity of a working bathroom.

Do I need a slotted or unslotted waste?

If your basin has an overflow hole, fit a slotted waste so water can drain through it. Basins without an overflow take an unslotted waste. Most UK basins use a standard 1¼ inch (32mm) waste, which is universal across manufacturers. Baths and kitchen sinks use a larger 40mm waste, so don't mix them up.

Can I update my sink without replacing the vanity unit?

Yes. Countertop and semi-recessed basins sit neatly onto existing worktops or furniture, so you can refresh the look without a full rebuild. Switching from a pedestal to a wall-hung style is more involved, as waste and supply pipes will usually need to run up the wall.
