What is a column radiator?
A column radiator features a series of vertical tubes (columns) through which hot water flows, producing heat. Traditional column radiator designs have been a home heating staple for over a century. Today, they offer the same timeless aesthetic but with modern performance, making them a smart choice for both period and contemporary interiors.
Types of column radiators
Column radiators come in several configurations to suit different spaces and heating needs, including:
-
Vertical column radiators: Tall and upright, these make a real style statement while saving on wall width. Ideal for rooms with limited horizontal wall space.
-
Horizontal column radiators: The classic layout, designed to sit neatly beneath windows or along walls. They are a natural fit for most living spaces and bedrooms.
-
Single-column radiators: Also called 1-column radiators, these are the slimmest option. They provide a lower heat output, suited to smaller or well-insulated rooms.
-
Double-column radiators: Also known as 2-column radiators, they are the most popular choice. A double-column radiator offers a solid balance of style and heating performance for most rooms.
-
Triple-column radiators: 3-column radiators offer maximum heat output in the column radiator range. They are best suited to larger rooms or spaces that need a higher BTU rating.

How does the number of columns affect heat output?
Simply put, more columns mean more surface area, and more surface area means more heat. A single-column radiator emits the least heat, making it ideal for smaller spaces. A 2-column radiator sits in the middle, offering dependable warmth for average-sized rooms, and a triple-column radiator delivers the highest output. When choosing, always calculate the BTU (British Thermal Unit) requirement for your room before deciding on column depth.
Column radiator sizes
Our column radiators are available in a wide range of sizes to suit any space. Widths run from 290mm up to 1190mm, giving you flexibility whether you need a small column radiator for a compact room or a wider statement piece. Heights range from 83mm to 1800mm, covering everything from low-profile skirting styles to full-height vertical designs. Always measure your wall space carefully before purchasing, ensuring enough room for installation, pipework connections and adequate airflow around the radiator for efficient heat output.
How to bleed a column radiator
If your column radiator is warm at the bottom but cold at the top, it likely needs bleeding. Turn off your heating and allow the radiator to cool completely. Using a radiator bleed key, turn the bleed valve (at the top corner) slowly anti-clockwise. You will hear a hiss as trapped air escapes. Once water begins to drip out, close the valve. Check your boiler pressure and top up if needed.
How to fit a column radiator
Fitting a column radiator involves connecting to your existing pipework, securing wall brackets, and ensuring valves are correctly installed and sealed. While it may look straightforward, incorrect installation can lead to leaks or poor performance, so we always recommend using a qualified heating engineer or plumber.
